_HISTORY: Here

_ABILITIES: As a Turk, Rude has considerable combat experience. He largely prefers to fight with his fists, though he also has some basic gun training, and has a reputation for being the strongest of the Turks. Certainly he is able to go toe to toe with one of Sephiroth's Remnants and while he does take something of a beating, at no point could he be said to be defeated. He also has extensive experience in crafting and using explosives, something in which he takes some pride. (It helps that he enjoys explosions and anything that sets the adrenaline surging), and with appropriate Materia can cast some magic - though Materia use has largely fallen out of favour by his canon point.

On the flipside, Rude is never going to be the most socially adept or diplomatic. He can intimidate easily enough, because intimidation just needs standing and looming and looking threatening, but where a more delicate diplomatic touch is required then he's not an ideal choice. Additionally, while he follows orders without protest, he can let personal feelings influence the way he fights, which isn't always a good thing. For example, he is so reluctant to fight Tifa, on whom he has a crush, that it's in his game code that he'll avoid doing so if at all possible. He also has something of a tendency to think he can manage everything by himself, and is really bad at asking for help even when it's clear he needs it (Reno pestering him about this is how they became more of a regular partnership in the first place and even then, he keeps it to himself when a girl he dates turns out to be a spy for the enemy).

_PERSONALITY: At first glance, Rude comes across as a typical thug: skinhead, shades, seemingly devoid of much in the way of emotion and quiet almost to the point of silent, preferring to let his fists (or whoever he's working with, usually Reno) do the talking. And to a point, this is a reputation Rude is happy to encourage - or at least to not discourage - as it allows him a certain amount of intimidation factor which better allows him to perform in his role as a Turk. It's also a reputation that isn't without some basis in truth - he is quiet, stoic and more than willing to get his hands dirty in the name of serving Shinra and its President. He's also largely fearless (at least when it comes to physical danger) and something of a thrill-seeker, which is a large part of how he thrives so well as a member of the Turks - where many would run from explosive situations, he would far rather be within watching distance if at all possible. This is particularly highlighted in the Case of Shinra short story, culminating in Reno deciding to take him somewhere they could watch the onset of Meteorfall rather than hiding out in the bathroom as they had been.

Scratch the surface, however, and Rude is a lot more complex than most would think to look for. While he does play up his role as the quiet one a little, using the shades to make it harder still for people to read him, it soon becomes apparent that it isn't entirely an act - the quietness is just as much down to the fact that he's incredibly shy in many respects. A good example of this comes in the Mythrill mines when he confronts the party and falters in talking to them, leading Elena to intervene. Likewise, that he isn't particularly expressive is just a part of who he is - he is easier to read for those who've had time to get to know him and his quirks but it's rare that he gives much of himself away. Indeed, most of the times we see his awkwardness show it is connected to the fact that Rude is an incredibly private person and doesn't like to talk about himself at any great length - the conversation with Reno about who likes who in Gongaga is a good example of this; Rude's happy to comment on Elena liking Tseng but beforehand, when he admits to his crush on Tifa, he's very reluctant and hesitates a good moment or two before answering Reno's question.

This isn't the only way in which he defies the typical thug image. Just because he doesn't talk much doesn't mean he's unintelligent. In fact, it's quite the opposite - generally, when he speaks it's worth listening to and he can come out with some quite insightful comments. For example, when discussing the matter of people returning to Shinra in the wake of Meteorfall with Reno he is the one who points out that many of them are likely looking to atone, and he also at one point compares Tseng and Rufus (both of whom having escaped death at least once) to cats - not a comment one would necessarily expect someone of his apparent demeanour to make. This also speaks to him having more of a sense of humour than people might expect, and to how utterly he knows how to read Reno and deliver something that will help to lift the mood, if only a little.

In contrast to his name, Rude is in fact incredibly polite. Even when capturing Cloud and his party during their infiltration of Shinra HQ, he does so with a civil request that Cloud press the up button for the elevator, and he is evidentially at least reluctant when it comes to hurting women - at Gongaga, Reno tells him not to go easy even on the girls, implying that Rude might otherwise be inclined to do so. And does, in one instance - when it comes to Tifa, he refuses to attack her unless he absolutely cannot avoid it and even then, if he does attack her it's with his weakest possible attack.

In fact, it would be safe to say that though it's well-hidden, Rude does have something of a romantic streak. This is best shown in Chapter 6 of Before Crisis, where he is seen dating a woman named Chelsea who turns out to be a spy for AVALANCHE. While we never fully see Rude's interpretation of things, it is apparent that he does genuinely like her despite knowing where her allegiances lie - it's highly likely that leaving his phone unattended around her was a form of test, as he makes clear when Reno tries to tell him about Chelsea belonging to AVALANCHE that he already knows. Either way, his sentimentalist streak shows quite prominently here - he remembers Chelsea's favourite flowers (though he insists it's a coincidence, despite that previously it had been shown that he'd gone to some lengths to track down a way to get them) and he's shown planning to tell her something on Christmas Eve by the celebration tree (which has a theme of Undying Love). Though the exact nature of what he was going to say or ask is unclear, it's clear it was intended to be a significant step in the relationship had she not chosen not to show up. Whether the fact that both Chelsea and Tifa are members of AVALANCHE speaks to Rude having a predilection for women who are part of the enemy side or is merely a coincidence is uncertain, although given that Reno calls him a sentimentalist it's not impossible that he holds to an ideal of love regardless of situation.

Another trait this situation shows is Rude's tendency to want to deal with his problems by himself. This can get him into trouble at times, as it likely would have done had Reno not caught up with him after he'd gone after Sears at Costa Del Sol, and is further proof of his reserved, private nature - possibly because it's easier, from his perspective, to try to fix things himself than it is to find the words to admit he needs help, though it's likely pride has something to do with it as well.

For all he keeps his problems to himself, however, there is no questioning Rude's loyalty to Rufus Shinra and especially to the Turks. He and Reno have, over the years, gone from a partnership of grudging tolerance on Rude's part to one of the strongest partnerships of the organisation, with Rude's strength balancing Reno's speed and way with words, and he quickly comes to show concern over Elena - when she runs off after Don Corneo in Wutai, it's implied that Rude wants to go after her and/or try to stop her (with Reno telling him to leave her) and once it turns out she's been kidnapped, he appears more overtly concerned than Reno does (though Reno's mask slips a little once Rude is out of earshot). Equally, when Elena and Tseng are kidnapped by Sephiroth's Remnants two years later, he is quick to follow up Reno's wish that Tseng was with them by adding Elena's name to that wish. This scene also shows how much faith he puts in his fellow Turks - when Reno says that he hopes Tseng and Elena are alive, Rude doesn't hesitate to insist that they are.

Overall, Rude is a tough nut to crack for those who don't care to see him as anything more than the silent muscle of the Turks. But for those who care to take the time to look, there's a lot more to him than that - and for the Turks and Rufus, there can be no question of his loyalty and dedication to them; others may be able to pick up on most of the story when it comes to him but only Rufus and the other Turks come even close to knowing everything.

_ITEMS: As well as the suit he's wearing, Rude will arrive with his Turk ID, a standard-issue Turk firearm and that's about it.
